Teresa Brambilla

1813–1895 · Italian · soprano

Birthplace: Cassano d'Adda, Kingdom of Italy (Napoleonic)

Teresa Brambilla was an Italian soprano who created Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto at La Fenice in 1851. She came of a family of singers from Cassano d'Adda: the contralto Marietta Brambilla was her elder sister, and the soprano Teresina Brambilla-Ponchielli her niece and pupil. She studied at the Milan Conservatory and made her debut in 1831, then sang throughout Italy for some fifteen years, and in Odessa and Barcelona. In 1846 she appeared in Paris as Abigaille in Nabucco. Her other Verdi roles included Luisa Miller and Elvira in Ernani.
