1839 (disputed)–1907 · Austrian · baritone

Birthplace: Pest, Austrian Empire

Louis von Bignio was a baritone who anchored the Vienna Kärntnertortheater and its successor, the Vienna Court Opera, for twenty years. Trained in Pest under Peter Stoll and in Vienna under Gaetano Rossi and Giovanni Gentiluomo, he made his stage debut as a hunter in Konradin Kreutzer's Das Nachtlager in Granada before joining the Kärntnertortheater in 1863, where he created Wolfram von Eschenbach in the house's 1875 Tannhäuser. His repertoire also included Rigoletto, Count Luna in Il trovatore and the title role of Hérold's Zampa. The house made him a Kammersänger and, on his 1883 departure, an honorary member.
