Marguerite Bériza

A French singer, born in London, who began at the Opéra-Comique in 1900 in small mezzo-soprano roles and took on its leading soprano repertoire from 1912. There she created roles by Rabaud and Terrasse and was Kate Pinkerton in the first Paris Madama Butterfly, later singing Suzuki. From 1914 to 1917 she sang in the United States, in Boston, Chicago and at Ravinia. In 1924 she founded the avant-garde Théâtre Bériza in Paris, where she created the title role of Ibert's Angélique in 1927. She was married for a time to the tenor Lucien Muratore.
