Hippolyte Belhomme
also Hypolite Belhomme
Birthplace: Paris, France
A French bass who spent most of his career at the Opéra-Comique, in comic and character parts as much as leading ones. He trained at the Paris Conservatoire and made his debut with the company in 1879 as Baskir in Lalla-Roukh, staying, apart from seasons in Lyon and Marseille, until 1916. He created Crespel in Les contes d'Hoffmann and Benoît in the first Paris La bohème, sang Pistol in the company's first Falstaff and was admired as Don Basilio. At the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels in 1907 he sang Kecal in the first Bartered Bride given in French.
