Ruggero Astillero

A baritone who created Lescaut in the revised Manon Lescaut, first given at the Teatro Coccia in Novara on 21 December 1893, having sung Alfio at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome that winter. He was at the Liceu in Barcelona through the 1894-95 season and the spring of 1895, in L'amico Fritz, Massenet's Manon, Les Huguenots, La favorite and Faust, and returned in 1907-08 for Manon, Carmen and Werther. In the early 1920s he was among the veterans at the retired tenor Angelo Masini's birthday table in Forlì, where he named Aramburo as the tenor who had most impressed him.
