Anton Arnold

Anton Arnold was an Austrian tenor, later a character tenor, who studied with Paul Greiff and Laura Hilgermann and made his debut in 1909 at Olmütz. He held engagements at Teplitz-Schönau, Regensburg and Dortmund before joining the Vienna Court Opera in 1916, where he sang for the rest of his active career; he created the Officer in the premiere of the revised Ariadne auf Naxos that year and the Hunchback in the premiere of Die Frau ohne Schatten in 1919. Across some two hundred roles and more than 2,500 performances at the house, he gained popularity with audiences as David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Mime in the Ring. He continued to give guest performances and concerts until 1948.
