Charles R. Adams

Charles R. Adams toured the United States and the West Indies before studying further in Vienna with Carlo Barbieri, then sang at the Berlin Royal Opera and, from 1867 to 1876, as principal tenor of the Vienna Hofoper, in roles including Raoul, Edgardo, Lohengrin and the title role of Tannhäuser, creating Walther von der Vogelweide when the house gave its revised version in 1875. He also sang at La Scala and Covent Garden. Returning to America, he sang the title role in the first American Rienzi in 1878, then taught in Boston, whose pupils included Nellie Melba and Emma Eames.
